The House Homeland Security Committee’s chairman, Republican Rep. Mark Green of Tennessee, plans to retire from Congress once the House votes again on the tax and budget policy bill backed by President Donald Trump.

Experts said the addition of numerous tax breaks provides new ways for people to try to game the system while making it more difficult for everyday Americans to file their returns.

Democratic Sen. Jeff Merkley said he supports the policy at issue, though not the process the GOP might use to enact it.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) -Republican U.S. House Representative Mark Green said on Monday that he will resign from Congress to take up an offer from the private sector after the House votes again on President Donald Trump’s sweeping tax and spending bill. “Recently, I was offered an opportunity in the private sector that was too exciting to pass up,” Green, who chairs the House Committee on Homeland Security, said in a statement. “As a result, today I notified the Speaker and the House of Representatives that I will resign from Congress as soon as the House votes once again on the reconciliation package,” he added.

The Homeland Security chair said he plans to accept a private sector job he did not immediately disclose.

Mark Green had previously announced he wouldn’t run again but changed his mind when Republicans urged him to stay

House Republicans need to make sure their package passes muster with the Senate rules.
